In an effort to increase the retention rates of teachers in the field, the aggieTEACH program was expanded with funds received from the Greater Texas Foundation in 2012. This grant funded project enabled aggieTEACH to provide support and resources their graduates during the first three to five years of their teaching careers. Following graduation, new teachers are invited to participate in the Mentor and Induction (M&I) Program. They are provided resources and support through phone calls, email, classroom visits, and a private website designed to meet the needs of beginning teachers. The website, “aggieTEACH Advice”, is an electronic platform that contains resources such as a beginning of the year checklist, classroom management advice, open house templates, quality mathematics and science lessons, and many other tips for novice teachers. The addition of the M&I Program to aggieTEACH has helped keep retention rates of aggieTEACH teachers well above the state and national percentages. Another wonderful mentoring opportunity is through the “We Teach Texas P12 Mentoring and Coaching Academy“. The purpose of the academy is to provide evidence-based professional development for P12 mentors and coaches who support beginning teachers throughout the state of Texas. Does your school or district need help supporting beginning teachers? The We Teach Texas P12 Mentoring and Coaching Academy offers a self-paced online Level 1 course that explores the best practices in mentoring and coaching for P12 leaders, and offers ways to positively impact the beginning teachers’ readiness to teach. Organized around 7 topics, and formatted in the research-based L.E.A.D.E.R. model, the Academy’s standards-driven curriculum will guide participants through readings, videos, and applications to implement new ideas and tools focused on what it means to be an effective leader within your community for novice Texas teachers.
